World ATM Day is celebrated every year on 27th June, the day the world's first cash machine was unveiled in London, UK.
We will celebrate this birthday every year by announcing the 'Extreme ATM of The Year'. These will be chosen from the previous year's 'ATMs of The Month'.
This can be found in the 'MORE' button at the top.
In mimicking the US Declaration of Independence, it starts, "WE THE PEOPLE ... being members of that honourable and just society that so appreciates the Automated Teller Machine (Cash Machine) and all its public usefulness ..."
The ATM is under-appreciated by society. Access to cash is a civil right. That's why you can find ATMs in some of the most inhospitable and difficult-to-reach places on the planet.
Cash also acts as a bulwark against the excesses of authoritarian government and commercial exploitation.
Of the 3+ million ATMs around the world, some can be found in the most unexpected and extreme locations such as in submarines, royal palaces, or church organs. Others are just weird, having been dressed up to look like cupcakes. Or pink pigs.
The demand for cash always surges in times of crisis. This is when ATMs become indispensable dispensers of trust.
This site is the brainchild of James Shepherd-Barron, son of the ATM's inventor. "It's a celebration of my Dad's legacy as much as it's a fun way of making the case for cash."
The ATM Appreciation Society exists solely to celebrate the awesomeness of the ATM. It's not out to make a profit. It's not a scam. And it doesn't sell your data.
To champion ATMs as the world's original (electronic) 'fintech' and the pivotal role they play in reducing disaster risk and enhancing financial inclusion.
The full story of the ATM's invention can be found in 'Hole in the Wall' available in this site's shop.
